Intrauterine insemination (IUI)
A gentler treatment: prepared sperm is placed in the uterus at the right moment of your cycle.

In intrauterine insemination (IUI), your partner’s sperm is prepared in the laboratory and placed inside the uterus at the right moment of your cycle.
In a menstrual cycle, several eggs can be made to mature by taking certain hormone medicines.
Who it can help
Male factors:
- Low sperm count with reduced motility (oligoasthenozoospermia)
When the semen analysis is abnormal, higher pregnancy rates are achieved only when ovulation is assisted with medicines that make several eggs mature in the woman.
Female factors:
- Irregular cycles
- Repeated cycles without ovulation
- Ovulation at an unpredictable time
- Luteal phase deficiency
Tests before treatment
Before starting medication, hormone tests are needed to look into any irregularities of the menstrual cycle:
- Ruling out high prolactin (hyperprolactinaemia)
- Checking the gonadotrophins (FSH, LH)
- Ruling out high male hormones, for example with polycystic ovaries (testosterone, DHEA-S)
- Checking thyroid function (TSH, fT3, fT4)
- Checking for possible insulin resistance
